The organizations we name each year as National Main Street Programs are those that have demonstrated the skills needed to succeed in Main Street revitalization.
The annual accreditation process evaluates commercial district revitalization programs based on criteria ranging from having an active board of directors and paid professional manager to tracking economic progress and preserving historic Main Street buildings.
Rebuilding a districts economic health and maintaining that success requires broad-based community involvement, active support from both the public and private sectors, and sound management, said Loescher. Having a solid organization at the foundation of that revitalization effort is so important to long term success.

Tilton Main Street Program Receives HUD Grant
The Tilton Main Street Program has been informed that they were selected to receive funding of $15,000 (fifteen thousand) in HUD grant money. In May 2006, the New Hampshire Main Street Center EDI Review Committee evaluated thirteen grant applications for the NH Main Street Challenge Grant received via the US Department of Housing and Urban Development and US Senator Judd Gregg.
The applications were limited to bricks & mortar projects. Funded projects generally scored strongly in areas such as: overall impact on local economy, direct community benefit, visibility of improvements, and positive impact for the local Main Street program.
The co-applicant, Bryant & Lawrence Hardware will be using the grant to preserve and enhance the building, which was built in 1871 and has been a hardware store since that date. This may well be the oldest continuous running hardware store in the state. The Lawrence family has been running the store since 1921. This building is one of several on Main Street that is registered with the National Register of Historic Buildings.

Judy Rich, the Director of Tiltons Main Street Program, was awarded Main Street Manager of the Year. These relationships have led to bigger and better fundraising efforts and events. Judy has never missed a single NH Main Street conference, meeting, or training session, she has developed new and different events, and did not miss one of last years deadlines for turning economic reports in to the NH Main Street Center.
Judys award was not the only one taken home by Tilton at this years awards ceremony. A Main Street Hero of the Year award was bestowed upon Tiltons own Pat Clark. Pats extensive community involvement was instrumental in building momentum for the Main Street Program. Pat has supported the program through a numerous efforts, not the least of which include participating in a two-day strategic planning process in 2004, and working with town officials to save important main street buildings from demolition during the Park Street Bridge expansion project.
